Hannover 1827-B 2-1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 31469 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $750. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hannover. George IV gold 2-1/2 Taler 1827-B AU58 NGC, Hannover mint. A truly gorgeous example featuring the glassy, highly reflective fields indicative of a proof issue. The flan remains a pleasant lemon-gold, revealing a light scattering of handling marks that can quickly be dismissed when set against a bloom of great eye-appeal. From the Collection of a Berkshire Gentleman." The bust of the king is of George IV, king of Great Britain. Various types of ten thaler pieces were struck most years between 1814 and 1855; the type shown here was issued 1821, 1827 and 1830 and is probably the most numerous of these scarce coins. The kingdom of Hannover was the old duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg prior to the Napoleonic invasions. It was separated from the British crown in 1837 and absorbed by Prussia in 1866.
