This specimen was lot 38362 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. 20 Mark, 1878-J. Hamburg Mint. Free City. PCGS MS-64." This type was struck 1875-84 and 1887-89. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This date is common.

Specification: 7.96 g, 0.900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW.
