Germany 1878-A mark

from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 22413

This specimen was lot 22413 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mark, 1878-A. NGC MS-64. Uniquely toned with a rectangular window of brilliance atop the eagle motif and attractive multicolored tone elsewhere. Cataloged as a better date with a value in the Standard Catalog of World Coins of $1,500 in MS63." This type was struck 1873-87 at nine mints; this specimen is a product of the Berlin mint ("A"). In 1891, a modified eagle was introduced and this denomination was struck in that form until 1918 (see KM 14).

Recorded mintage: 1,526,744, a better date.

Specification: 5.55 g, 0.900 fine silver, .160 troy oz ASW.
