Hamburg 1789-OHK 16 schilling
This specimen was lot 34036 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hamburg. Free City 16 Schilling (1/2 Taler) 1789-OHK MS64 NGC. A sterling and choice piece, well struck, with considerably nice surfaces for the grade, and a hypnotic luster. Quite possibly one of the finest extant." The first sixteen schillings struck in the 1580's were worth half a thaler. Two centuries later, when this one year type was issued, the denomination had dropped to a third of a thaler. This is the final issue. OHK stood for mint warden Otto Heinrich Knorre, who held the post 1761-1805.
