Künker sale 264, lot 3699

This specimen was lot 3699 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,800 (about US$3,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STADT 2 Dukaten 1754, mit Titel von Franz I. Münzmeister Johann Hinrich Löwe. GOLD. R Nur 550 Exemplare geprägt. Sehr attraktives Exemplar, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, city of Hamburg, double ducat of 1754, in the name of Francis I. Scarce, only 550 struck, very attractive, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type is listed for 1754-65 but is rare. It varies from the prior type (also Fr-1124) by moving the date from the reverse to the obverse. Single ducats exist (Fr-1125) and are slightly more available.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6,96 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-1124; Gaed. 34 a, KM 413.
