Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 3660

This specimen was lot 3660 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. Taler, 1588. NGC EF-45. Dark toned." This type was struck 1585-88. It is technically a 32 schilling piece but is universally classed as a thaler. Double thalers (Dav-9222) exist. The city of Hamburg issued coins almost continuously until the end of World War One and the mint there is still in operation, striking coins for the Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
