Künker sale 264, lot 3677

This specimen was lot 3677 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €700 (about US$904 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STADT Goldgulden o. J. (1440-1451), mit Titel Friedrichs III. als König. GOLD. Leicht gewellt, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Hamburg, undated gold gulden, struck in the name of Frederick III as king. Slightly bent, very fine.)"

This is the second gold coin noted for this Hanseatic city which today still dominates the North Sea coast of Germany. Tho not cheap, this is the most available type until the late seventeenth century.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW; this specimen is 3,20 g.
