In 1803, native forces in Haiti made good their rebellion against French rule, marking the first successful slave rebellion in the Western hemisphere. Turmoil did not cease with independence as the United States withheld its recognition and various factions contended for power. This specimen was lot 57027 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "HAITI. 50 Centimes, Year 25 (1828). NGC MS-63. Ex: R.L. Lissner Collection." The coin is dated An 27 (1828 AD), following the example presented by the French Revolution for dating coins from the year of independence. Others are known dated An 24 thru An 30. It was accompanied by similar hundred, twelve and 25 centimes.

Specification: 5.23-5.38 g, silver, probably debased; 25-26 mm diameter.
