Haiti 1846 2 centimes rev DSLR.jpg

In 1803, native forces made good their rebellion against French rule, marking the only successful slave rebellion in the Western hemisphere. Turmoil did not cease with independence as the United States withheld its recognition and various factions contended for power. This type was struck 1828-42 and most dates are priced low in the SCWC but no locally struck Haitian coin is readily available in nice condition.

The first example is a copper 1846 2 centimes, also dated 'An 43', meaning 43 years since independence. There are three varieties of this date. The second specimen was lot 1534 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Haiti, copper 2 centimes, AN 43/1846, 26 mm ("French strike"), encapsulated NGC MS 65 BN, tied for finest known in NGC census. KM-26. Beautifully rainbow toned and with patch of original color in center of reverse, no marks or wear at all, top grade in census for any color, tied with one other for BN designation. (Note photo was taken through an older plastic slab that shows friction that is not on the coin.) NGC #3355379-006."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: KM 27.2.
