Haiti SB119-41091r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41091 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "HAITI. 1/2 Escalin, ND (1802). NGC VF-35. Revolutionary government issue (1798-1802). Evenly struck with full details visible and medium gray toning over lightly marked surfaces. RARE. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II." This type was accompanied by KM 22 (escalin) and KM 23 (2 escalins). The chaos of the early years of Haitian independence left little time for coinage; this combined with the chronic shortage of coinage in the Caribbean to make these early issues rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, probably debased.

Catalog reference:KM 21; Rudman-24.
