Hainaut 1581 1/40 ecu
This specimen was lot 1047 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"HAINAUT, Comté, Philippe II (1555-1598), billon quarantième d'écu Philippe, 1581, Mons. D/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. R/ Croix fleuronnée. Très rare. Beau. (county of Hainaut, Philip II, 1555-98, billon 1/40 écu Philippe of 1581, Mons mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Reverse: floriate cross. Very rare, Fine.)"
This type represents a very early experiment with decimal coinage, over a century before Russia adopted her hundred kopeks = one ruble. While we have seen and posted half, fifth, tenth and twentieth écus, this is the first fortieth écu we have encountered. The Mons mint operated 1581-87.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 1,30 g.
