Hagenau 1665-GHP thaler Dav-5334
This specimen was lot 1132 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 25,000 CHF (about US$30,345 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE | Hagenau (Elsass/Alsace) | Stadt. Taler 1665. Mit Titel Leopolds I. Mit der Signatur GHP (Georg Hartmann-Plappert, Münzmeister in Hagenau, 1664-1673). Äusserst selten. Vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Feine Patina. (France, city of Hagenau in Alsace, thaler of 1665, struck in the name of Leopold I, with mintmaster's initials "GHP". Extremely rare, Extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"
Hagenau was an imperial free city in Alsace near Strasbourg. It was occupied by France in 1648 and annexed in 1679. The town also struck 1, 2, 3, 4, 12, 18, 30 and 60 kreuzer. In the late seventeenth century, one thaler = 90 kreuzer.
