Steve Album sale 51, lot 2750

This specimen was lot 2750 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $204. The catalog description[1] noted, "BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AR rupee, Gwalior, AH1218 year 46, in the name of Shah Alam II, with the British sword above the J of jalus, several banker's marks only on the edge, VF, R." The maharaja of Gwalior asserted his independence in the late eighteenth century and came into several conflicts with the British. Daulat Rao (r. 1794-1827) lost Gwalior Fort to the British in 1803 but had it restored to him in 1805. This rupee was struck there during the British occupation.
