Guyana 1987 5 cents
This specimen was lot 73493 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $60. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUYANA. 5 Cents, 1987. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by just four examples, this radiant Gem presents blazing beauty and allure that shimmers entirely throughout. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Guyana began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of Essequibo & Demerary, which later became British Guiana. Independence was obtained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago rather than with other South American nations. This type was struck 1967, 1972-92. The Franklin mint struck five cents 1976-80 of a different design; these were sold to collectors.
