This specimen was lot 52326 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $5,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Sultanate Coinage. Sultans of Gujarat. "Heavy" Tanka, AH 915 (1509). Muhammadabad Mint. Nasir al-din Mahmud I. NGC MS-64. A VERY RARE ruler from Gujarat, we can find no other examples of this type trading the recent past. When coupled with the beautiful details and crisp strike, this example delivers much commendability. Lustrous and presenting a full date on flan, this example is certain to catch the eye of all specialists in the type." The sultanate of Gujarat was a Muslim state on the west coast of India to the south of Kutch. It was founded by Zafar Khan Muzaffar, who declared himself independent of the Delhi sultanate in 1407. Weakened by Portuguese and Mughal attacks, the sultanate was conquered and the last sultan committed suicide in 1591.
