This specimen is the first coin issued by Guinea-Bissau as part of the F.A.O. series and the first coin of that denomination. Guinea-Bissau issued an entire series of F.A.O. coins, ranging from fifty centavos to 2000 pesos. The region was formerly Portuguese Guinea and since 1975, has been dominated by the same politcal party that rules Cape Verde. It lies on the Atlantic Coast of Africa, between Senegal and (French-speaking) Guinea. The coin shown features the coconut palm, a plant of many uses in West Africa.
