Guatemala 1926 5 quetzales
The first specimen was lot 2634 in Goldberg sale 53 (Beverly Hills, May 2009) and sold for $500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guatemala. 5 Quetzals, 1926. Quetzal on column. Reverse: Arms. Lustrous. One year type. NGC graded AU-58." This issue was accompanied by a gold ten and twenty quetzales.
The Eliasberg specimen (shown below) sold for $575. The catalog description[2] noted, "1926 5 quetzales. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold with rich toning, scrape under legends in left obverse field. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
Recorded mintage: 48,000.
Specification: 8.36 g, 0.900 fine gold, .242 troy oz AGW. The Eliasberg specimen was 8.37 grams, 21.90 mm.
