This peso is a scarce variation on the familiar slouched Justice type struck 1872-79 and 1894-97. It varies from previous and subsequent issues by having the date at the top of the reverse instead of the more usual bottom. The year 1878 is also known for this catalog number but it is much rarer. The "D" on the reverse is an assayer's initial, not a mintmark. This specimen was lot 13433 in Heritage sale 351 (Long Beach, CA, June 2004), where it sold for $529. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Peso 1879-D, AU53 NGC. Date and fineness at the top. Very scarce type."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 200.
