The specimen shown is of a common type struck 1878-79. Numerous varieties exist for 1878: KM 146 (assayer F, 0.900 fine), KM 146a.1 (stars below wreath), KM 146a.2 (.835 fine, shown here), KM 146a.3 (assayer G below wreath). Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society.
