The first specimen was lot 72575 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $115. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 1/4 Real, 1878-G. Nueva Guatemala Mint. PCGS MS-67 Gold Shield. Small G variety. Exceedingly argent and untoned, this Gem minor is about as attractive as one can find. Tied with just one other specimen for the finest in the PCGS census, and equivalent to the Lissner specimen--an NGC MS-67." The specimen shown is of a common type struck 1878-79. Numerous varieties exist for 1878: KM 146 (assayer F, 0.900 fine), KM 146a.1 (stars below wreath), KM 146a.2 (.835 fine), KM 146a.3 (assayer G below wreath, shown here). Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society. The second specimen was lot 41170 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[2] noted, "GUATEMALA. 1/4 Real, 1878-G. Nueva Guatemala Mint. NGC MS-64. Large G/O variety. Surpassed by just one other example of this variety. Rather velvety with a rosy gray coloration and crisp depiction of the mintmark variant. From the EMO Collection."

Recorded mintage: 680,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 0.77 g, 0.835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 146a.3.
