This specimen was lot 71017 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Centavo, 1871. PCGS MS-64 RB Secure Holder. One year type. Bold strike with plenty of original mint luster." This one year type was an attempt by the regime to decimalize the currency and get the populace to accept base metal coinage. In this, it was a failure. Many were purchased by landowners and used as hosts for fichas, the tokens used in the infamous company store to defraud the peasants. Another attempt to circulate centavos in 1881 also failed.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper or bronze.

Catalog reference: KM-196.
