Guatemala 1779-NG P 2 reales
This specimen was lot 38473 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 2 Reales, 1779-NG P. Nueva Guatemala Mint. Charles III. PCGS F-12. SCARCE first date for 2 Reales from the Nueva Guatemala mint." In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "P" is noted for the years 1759-85. Unlike the other colonial mints, Guatemala portrait eight reales of Charles III are much rarer than the other denominations. Guatemala issues are notably cruder than other mints.
