Greece 1926 2 drachmai
This specimen was lot 73561 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREECE. 2 Drachmai, 1926. NGC MS-63. A pleasant Choice example, this wholesome piece yields a soft luster and essentially no evidence of marking or handling." In 1922, the Greek monarchy was overthrown as a consequence of the defeat by the Turks and a republic established which lasted until 1935. During its brief existence, a series of handsome coins was issued including this two drachmas. This type was struck in a large quantity and is common in all grades altho this example realized triple the catalog value. The head is of Athena, goddess of wisdom.
