JE164-1934r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1934 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €80 (about US$111 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRÈCE, Othon Ier (1832-1862), Cu 10 lepta, 1843, Athènes. 1er type. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of Greece, Otto I, 1832-62, copper ten lepta, Athens mint, first type. Fine - Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in 1833 at Munich and 1836-38, 1843-44 at Athens. Like most of the issues of nineteenth century Greece, this ten lepta is scarce, despite the substantial mintage. King Otto fell foul of the local politicians and was forced to abdicate in 1863.

Recorded mintage: 700,500.

Specification: 12.99 g, copper, 28 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Divo, Grèce, 18e; Karamitsos 76; KM 17.
