Greece 1828 phoenix
This specimen was lot 33249 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,164. The catalog description[1] noted, "Greece. John Kapodistrias Phoenix 1828-(c) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC, Aegina mint. An experimental, single-year denomination that comes highly sought in any grade, the present example of which, while cleaned, admits next to no evidence of striking weakness or use in jewelry. From the Engelen Collection of World Coinage." After wresting her independence from the Turks, Greece was established as a republic under John Capodistrias. This regime lasted until 1831. After Greece was converted to a monarchy, this denomination was dropped in favor of the drachma.
