Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73830
SB1123-73830r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73830 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Gold 50 Pence, 2006. Llantrisant Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the institution of the Victoria Cross and the 40th anniversary of the 50p coin. Frosty yellow upon the devices and immensely mirrored in the fields, this specimen yields a great cameo nature." This circulating commemorative was struck in multiple formats, with the gold proof shown here. The auctioneers catalogued this as KM 1058, which also honored the Victoria cross but with a different reverse. Confusingly, the SCWC does not list either issue in gold. Other fifty pence for 2006 included KM 991 (Britannia seated reverse) and KM 1080 (Britannia standing).

Recorded mintage: 12,087,000 in copper-nickel plus 50,000 proofs plus 7,500 in silver plus pieforts plus 804 in gold.

Specification: 8 g, copper-nickel, 27.3 mm diameter, or 8 g, 0.925 fine silver. Designed by Claire Aldridge.

Catalog reference: KM 1057 (copper-nickel), KM 1057a (silver), S-H16; KM-1057b (gold).
