Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23798

This specimen was lot 23798 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1966. NGC MS-66. A lovely little select GEM with smooth surfaces and nice cartwheel luster with just a hint of tone in the peripheries. From the Collection of Richard Jewell." This type was struck 1957-68 for sale to collectors and bullion speculators and did not circulate altho some show signs of mishandling. The next issue (KM 919) was struck in 1974.

Recorded mintage: 7,050,000.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22 mm diameter, 0.2355 troy oz AGW.
