Great Britain 1953 penny KM-884
This specimen was part of lot 20645 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), which did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Four Piece Maundy Set, 1953. CHOICE PROOF. SCARCE one year type set. A high grade set from Elizabeth II's coronation year. Lightly toned. By far the most difficult maundy set to obtain from this Monarch, handed out personally by the Queen herself at St. Paul's cathedral." Since medieval times, the monarch or her representative has handed out Maundy sets to the poor on Maundy Thursday. When the tradition began, silver pennies, tuppence, threepence and groats were circulating coins but are now long since obsolete. Silver pennies have not been struck for circulation since the reign of George III.
Recorded mintage: 1,050.
Specification: 0.47 g, 0.925 fine silver.
