Sincona sale 86, lot 1679

This specimen was lot 1679 in Sincona sale 86 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 950 CHF (about US$1,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Victoria, 1837-1901. Half Sovereign 1879, London. Fourth young head, shield reverse. Die number '88'. Extremely rare. NGC AU53."

This bust was used on the half sovereign, or ten shilling coin, 1838-85. This date is scarce. Die numbering was an experiment done at the mint 1863-80 apparently in an attempt to gather data on die life. Die numbers are also noted on sixpences, shillings, florins and sovereigns.

Recorded mintage: 35,000.
