This specimen was lot 31220 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "Victoria Proof 4 Pence 1842 PR64 NGC, An extremely rare Proof of record, produced to an exceptionally high standard. Surely deserving of a 'cameo' designation, this piece exhibits an icy white Proof sheen turning matte as it flows across Wyon's portrait of young Victoria, remaining flashy in the fields and giving the much-loved contrast. The peripheries have toned a light golden brown, framing the gleaming centers effectively and adding to the eye appeal. Scarcely ever encountered at auction, this piece would make a superb addition to any collection of British Proofs. From the Lake County Collection." This fourpence or groat was struck for circulation in Great Britain and British Guiana 1838-55. Numerous overdates exist. The Maundy groat used the same obverse but a different reverse and was struck 1838-87.

Recorded mintage: 725,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 1.89 g, 0.925 fine silver, .056 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 731.1, ESC-1937 (R3).
