Great Britain 1798 1/3 guinea
This specimen was lot 3292 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $1,552.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Third Guinea, 1798. George III. Uncirculated and free from abrasions. The coin has a nice mellow yellow gold finish. Lustrous and attractive. Well struck with lots of eye appeal. NGC graded MS-64." This type was struck 1797-1800, presumably to pay soldiers and sailors during the Napoleonic Wars; it is the first of its denomination. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
