This specimen was lot 443 in Ponterio sale 158 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $___. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/3 Guinea, 1797. BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck 1797-1800, presumably to pay soldiers and sailors during the Napoleonic Wars; it is the first of its denomination. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. As the guinea was 21 shillings, this coin would have been seven shillings.
