Great Britain 1786 penny
This specimen was lot 74759 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Penny, 1786. London Mint. George III. NGC MS-65. Tied with just three other examples for the top spot in the NGC census, this resounding Gem glistens with a mostly argent central area and deeper burnished toning nearer the peripheries." This type was struck 1763-86 and, tho not rare, is difficult to find in nice condition. It is difficult to appreciate that prior to 1797, all English pennies were struck in silver, a holdover from medieval issues.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver.
