Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72058
GB SB1019-72058r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72058 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Farthing, 1749. London Mint. George II. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. Some minor, even wear across the higher points, but an otherwise charming example, offering pleasing chocolate brown surfaces that are problem free. From the Regent Crest Collection." This type is listed for 1746, 1749-50, 1754 and is fairly common in worn condition. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: S-3722; KM-581.2.
