This specimen was lot 2082 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Shilling, 1741. George II. Roses. Toned. PCGS graded AU-55." This type was struck with numerous variants 1727-41 and is fairly common in worn condition. A scarce 1739/7 overdate is reported. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.
Catalog reference: S.3701; ESC-1202; KM 561.4.
