This specimen was lot 2926 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Silver Penny, 1716. George I. Laureate and draped bust right. NGC graded AU-58. WINGS." While this type of 1716-27 is not rare, it may surprise many beginning collectors that all pennies struck before 1797 were silver, a holdover from the middle ages when the penny was the sole coin in circulation. High grade examples, taken from Maundy sets, appear from time to time.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver, .015 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 544, S.3657.
