Sincona sale 75, lot 185

This specimen was lot 185 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 60,000 CHF (about US$72,828 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Grossbritannien | Königreich. Anne, 1702-1714. 5 Guineas 1714/3, London. D. TERTIO. Post-Union type. Draped bust. Selten. NGC AU55. (Rare.)"

This type, struck 1711-14, has long been popular among deep-pocketed collectors looking for big, glamorous gold coins. No other country struck gold coins this big in the eighteenth century except for some German portugaloser (ten ducats, 34.90 g) and Brazilian 20,000 réis (53.78 g). This denomination was last struck in 1753.
