Great Britain 1703 6 pence
This specimen was lot 30648 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Anne Sixpence 1703-VIGO, Pre-Union issue, MS63 NGC. Beautiful bright blue iridescent toning. The portrait and reverse shield are pleasing, but an ancient rectangular scratch appears in the field before the queen's face. Minted from silver specie captured in a famous battle at Vigo Bay in 1702 near the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession. In triumph, the British placed the taunting hallmark 'VIGO' in bold letters beneath the queen's portrait." The "VIGO" sixpence was struck in 1703 only but similar sixpence without "VIGO" were issued in 1705 and 1707.
Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.
Specification: 3.01 g, 0.925 fine silver.
