Great Britain 1671 3 pence
This specimen was part of lot 22739 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), which sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Set (4 Pieces), 1671. Charles II. All PCGS Gold Shield Certified. A nicely matched Maundy set graded by PCGS. Very high quality for such an early set. The 4 Pence is graded AU-58, the 3 Pence is graded AU-58, the 2 Pence is graded MS-62 and the Penny is graded AU-55. All with nice original toning. From Jeff Zarit, 2011, at $850, the Q. David Bowers Collection." All the dated silver threepence of Charles II are of this type, which is common. Silver threepence were struck until the end of World War One and a few are still struck for the Maundy sets.
