SB822-32046r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32046 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $8,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Unite, ND (1645). London Mint; mm: eye. Charles I. NGC AU-55. Group D, fifth bust. Struck under Parliament. Obverse: Crowned and armored bust left; XX (mark of value) to right; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms; crown above. Highly brilliant and lustrous, this golden-yellow specimen presents a rather alluring strike and tremendous overall detail remaining. Though holdered as S-2696, it instead appears to be a slightly earlier bust type. From the Augustana Collection." By 1645, Charles I had lost the Civil War and was a captive of Parliament, awaiting trial and execution. Divided over what would replace the monarchy, Parliament retained the king's portrait as long as possible.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: S-2693; Fr-249; N-2153; Brooker-Unlisted.
