Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23607
SB121-23607r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23607 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $332. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, ND (1619-25). London Mint. James I. PCGS Genuine--Edge Repaired, VF Details Gold Shield. Mintmark: thistle. An evenly worn coin with clear detail and even gray toning. The edge repair is subtle and does not distract from the overall appearance." This example is missing the tops of the letters and is suspiciously round and definitely light; one might think it is clipped. The mintmark is a thistle, used 1621-23. The half crown was the largest silver coin struck in Britain on a regular basis before the introduction of milled coinage in the 1660's. Silver crowns were struck during the Civil War but were emergency coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 15.05 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 11.55 g.

Catalog reference: S-2666; KM-61.
