SB0123-41648r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41648 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1618-19). London Mint; mm: plain cross. James I. NGC VF Details--Bent. Fifth bust right. From the Augustana Collection." With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain." Gold crowns were struck until the reign of Charles II as the mint struck silver crowns only sporadically. They were normally five shillings (as here) but thistle crowns exist which were only four shillings.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: S-2626; Fr-236; KM-36.
