Künker sale 386, lot 6294

This specimen was lot 6294 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$8,399 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND, 2 DM 1959, G. Max Planck. Von größter Seltenheit. Fast Stempelglanz. Nach Rücksprache mit dem Analysezentrum der Deutschen Bundesbank gibt es hinsichtlich der Versteigerung dieser Münze keine Bedenken. (Federal Republic of Germany, two mark of 1959, Max Planck. Extremely rare, about uncirculated. After consultation with the analysis center of the Deutsche Bundesbank, we declare this coin authentic.)"

The 1959-G is an unlisted date so we can understand why the auctioneers went to great lengths to authenticate it. This type, featuring physicist Max Planck, was struck 1957-71.
