This specimen was lot 2586 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 200 (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "50 Pfennig 1898. Berlin. Vorzüglich. (extremely fine.)" This coin is a silver fifty pfennig from a type issued 1896-1903 from the Berlin (mintmark "A") mint. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design. This is a rather scarce type.
Recorded mintage: 387,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 2.77 g, 0.900 fine silver, .080 troy oz ASW, this specimen 2.78 g.
