Genoa 1656-IAB scudo largo Dav-LS555
This specimen was lot 4740 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,500 (about US$5,905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, GENUA, Republik (Dogi Biennali), 1528-1797. Scudo largo 1656. Mit Münzzeichen IAB auf der Rückseite. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung MS 62 (2129433-002). Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Italy, republic of Genoa, biennal doges, 1528-1797, large scudo of 1656, with mintmaster's initials on the reverse. Graded NGC MS-62, very scarce especially in this quality, very attractive example with handsome patina, minor planchet flaws, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1649-1719 with interruptions. Mintmaster IAB shows on the issues of 1652, 1653 and 1656. The scudo stretto was a more conventional size tho a similar design.
