Sincona sale 101, lot 2949

This specimen was lot 2949 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$2,261 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Genua, Dogi Biennali, 1528-1797. 2 Doppie 1618, Genova. Seltener Jahrgang. Gutes sehr schön. Unregelmässiger Schrötling. Aus dem Lager der Münzen & Medaillen GmbH, Weil am Rhein. (Italy, republic of Genoa, biennial doges, 1528-1797, double doppia of 1618, Genoa mint. Rare date, Good Very Fine, Irregular flan.)"

This type was struck 1603, 1608-09, 1612, 1617-32, 1637. According to the SCWC, this date should have initials "IZ" but we see "DN" on this example, similar to the 1619. The weight specification given below is that of a four ducats although a four goldgulden (13 g) may be more correct. Genoese coins were generally struck in the name of emperor Conrad II (d. 1039).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 13.37 g.

Catalog reference: KM 28, MIR 203/18 (R), Fr-418.
