Sincona sale 68, lot 5291

This specimen was lot 5291 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Geneva | Stadt und Kanton, 1 Sol 1817, Genf. FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (city and canton of Geneva, one sol of 1817, Geneva mint. Uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The auctioneers did not note whether this specimen was struck in bilon or silver; both exist for this date. Six deniers and 1½ sols were also struck in 1817. This denomination was last struck in 1833. In 1839, the coinage was decimalized to 100 centimes = one franc. Prior to that, French denominations such as deniers, sous and pistoles were used. In 1848, Geneva was incorporated into the reformed Swiss Confederation and coinage for the individual cantons ceased.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 0.96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 116 (billon), KM 116a (silver), D.T. 272, HMZ 2-359a.
