Geneva 1579-G ecu pistolet Fr-249
This specimen was lot 3259 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 36,000 CHF (about US$45,108 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Geneva | Stadt und Kanton, Ecu pistolet 1579, Genf. Genfer Stadtwappen auf gekröntem Doppeladler. Rv. Strahlende Sonne mit Christusmonogramm. In der Umschrift das Mzz. G. Äusserst selten. Gutes vorzüglich. (canton of Geneva, écu pistolet of 1579, Geneva mint. Obverse: double headed eagle supports the city arms; reverse: Christ's name in glory, mintmark below. Extremely rare, Good extremely fine.)"
Friedberg lists this obscure type for 1562-86 and notes that the last écu pistolet was struck in 1642. This is an unusually nice example of a normally crude type.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.33 g.
Catalog reference: Demole 523, HMZ 2-293q. Fr-249 (very rare).
