This specimen was lot 23837 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 500 Dalasis 1977, MS63 NGC, Conservation Series showing the Sitatunga." The Gambia is an English-speaking region wedged inside the French-speaking Senegal. Attempts to unify them have been fruitless.
Recorded mintage: 699 plus 285 proofs.
Specification: 33.437 g, 0.900 fine gold (same standard as a United States twenty dollar gold piece).
