Friedberg 1747-CPS thaler Dav-2250
The first specimen was lot 20386 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Friedberg. Taler, 1747-CPS. Johann Eitel II (1745-48). NGC MS-62. Well struck with the vast majority of the fine details visible without the aid of magnification. Attractive old tone from sitting for a prolonged period of time undisturbed. Provenance: Ex: Millennia Collection." The second specimen was lot 5262 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,101 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRIEDBERG, REICHSBURG, Hans Eitel Diede II. zum Fürstenstein, 1745-1748. Reichstaler 1747, Clausthal, mit Titel von Franz I. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (imperial city of Friedberg, Hans Eitel Diede II of Fürstenstein, 1745-48, thaler of 1747, Clausthal mint, struck in the name of Francis I. Scarce, especially in this quality, superb patina, extremely to uncirculated.)"
The SCWC lists this one-year type as scarce. The Burgraviate of Freidberg passed to Hesse in 1802.
